Step Block

This mod came out of the development for the improved two-step bed leveling procedure documented here.

Because I had developed a way to independently level the bed, then adjust its Z-home elevation very precisely, I needed a way to measure the distance from the tip of the nozzle to the bed surface quickly and safely. The step block accomplishes this easily: its thickness varies in 0.2 mm steps, from 0.4 mm to 4 mm.

It allows me to very quickly get the bed Z-home elevation close, then make a 0.2 mm thick first layer print. That print is measured with the calipers; I then can adjust the Z end stop up or down as needed to compensate, then rehome the Z axis.

The step block excels in making large changes quickly and safely; you don't have to worry about running the nozzle into the bed if you follow the procedure (which is very easy to do).

Note that it isn't critical to get the steps exactly the right thickness. The fact that you make a test print, then measure its first layer thickness allow you to dial in the thickness once you've gotten it close with the step block.
